UK offers five-year visas for artisans to address labour shortages

The United Kingdom has announced a new migration initiative designed to address ongoing labour shortages across critical industries.

Under the plan, foreign artisans and mid-skilled professionals in 82 occupations will be eligible for temporary work visas lasting between three and five years.

The scheme, detailed in a report by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), forms part of the government’s Temporary Shortage List — a focused strategy to attract workers to roles deemed vital to Britain’s industrial growth and long-term infrastructure plans.

According to the MAC, the new visa route covers a wide range of professions including carpenters, welders, bricklayers, fashion designers, civil engineers, translators, HR officers, photographers, and logistics managers.

These roles are considered central to advancing the UK’s economic agenda and supporting major projects in sectors such as defence, life sciences, creative industries, road construction, and hospital development.

While the visas will allow successful applicants to live and work in the UK for up to five years, they will not grant them the right to settle permanently unless future government policy changes.

Applicants will be required to meet a minimum English language threshold, while employers must also present clear plans to train and recruit local workers in order to reduce long-term dependence on migrant labour.

The MAC noted that only occupations backed by a “clear plan demonstrating action to maximise the use of domestic workers” should remain on the Temporary Shortage List.

A second phase of the review, scheduled for July 2026, will determine which roles will be included permanently.

This announcement comes at a time when the UK is grappling with rising net migration and persistent worker shortages across several key industries.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has adopted a firm stance on immigration amid growing public concern over illegal Channel crossings and as Labour trails the Reform UK party in recent opinion polls.

According to the MAC report, some of the professions included in the list are managers in logistics (job code 1,243), engineering technicians (3,113), building and civil engineering technicians (3,114), CAD, drawing and architectural technicians (3,120), IT operations technicians (3,131), authors, writers and translators (3,412), and musicians (3,415).

The initiative is expected to provide short-term relief for employers facing acute skills shortages, while the UK government continues to invest in training and upskilling its domestic workforce to sustain long-term economic growth.
