UniAbuja law student wins West African speech contest

A 500-level law student of the University of Abuja, Amra Salihu, has won the 9th Inter-Universities Speech Contest organised by the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA).

The university disclosed this in a statement on Thursday by its Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Habib Yakoob.

According to the statement, the competition was held on July 22 in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where Salihu represented Nigeria after emerging winner of the national selection organised by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

She defeated contestants from The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ghana to emerge overall winner of the regional competition.

For her feat, Salihu received a winner’s plaque, a certificate of honour and a cash prize of 1,000 US dollars.

The university also disclosed that another 500-level law student, Abah Goodness, attended the event as an observer.

Yakoob said the students were coached by the Director of the University Law Clinic, Dr Nasiru Mukhtar, alongside J. R. Gogol of the NFIU, who provided technical support.

Reacting to the achievement, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, congratulated Salihu and commended the Faculty of Law and the Law Clinic for their mentorship.

“Our students from the Faculty of Law have once again made the university proud. I congratulate them on this remarkable achievement,” he said.

Fawehinmi added that the university would continue to promote academic excellence and strengthen its global reputation through outstanding student achievements.
