UNIJOS lecturers declare indefinite strike

Lecturers at the University of Jos have declared an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their March 2026 salaries, throwing academic activities at the institution into uncertainty.

The branch chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Professor Jurbe Molwus, confirmed the industrial action to journalists in Jos on Wednesday, leaving no room for ambiguity about the union’s resolve.

“We are on strike, and we are not going to work until we are paid,” he said.

The strike took effect on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with the union directing all members to immediately withdraw from lectures, examinations and statutory meetings until outstanding salaries are settled.

In a circular signed by Molwus and distributed to members, ASUU blamed the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for the delay, noting that the university’s bursary had already completed its own obligations in the salary process.

“After following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, conduct of examinations and statutory meetings as our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience,” the statement read.

The union expressed frustration at what it described as a deliberate undermining of industrial peace, warning that those responsible appeared to be taking the patience of lecturers for granted.

ASUU further announced the activation of a strike monitoring team to enforce compliance, urging members to fully honour the directive.

The action remains in force, the union said, until salaries are paid in full.
