US advances new Lagos Consulate project with topping off ceremony

The United States has reached a major milestone in the construction of its new Consulate General in Lagos State, with officials celebrating the completion of the building’s highest structural point at Eko Atlantic City.

The Topping Off Ceremony held in Lagos on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, marked the completion of the core structure of the 10-storey Chancery building, bringing the state-of-the-art diplomatic facility a step closer to completion.

Speaking at the ceremony, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and Public Diplomacy, Richard Michaels, described the project as a symbol of the enduring partnership between the United States and Nigeria.

“This New Consulate Compound reflects cutting-edge construction and engineering techniques, built to the highest U.S. standards for design and construction, and stands as a lasting symbol of what our two nations can achieve together,” Michaels said.

Michaels added that the project demonstrates America’s long-term commitment to Nigeria, noting that Lagos, as the country’s commercial hub, is well positioned to deepen trade and investment between both nations.

“With commerce at the heart of our priorities, no place in Africa is better positioned than Nigeria, with Lagos as its economic hub, to drive shared prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic,” he said.

U.S. Consul General Brandon Hudspeth said the project represents more than the construction of a diplomatic facility.

“What we are building here at Eko Atlantic City is not just a building, but the foundation for the next chapter of our partnership,” Hudspeth said.

The ceremony was attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, senior Nigerian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, representatives of United States companies, and alumni of U.S. government exchange programmes.

During the event, participants performed the traditional ceremonial pouring of the final bucket of structural concrete onto the roof of the Chancery building.

The Topping Off ceremony is a long-standing construction tradition that signifies the completion of a building’s structural framework. It also marks four years of construction work on the new diplomatic complex.

Situated on a 12.2-acre (4.94-hectare) site in Eko Atlantic City, the new consulate campus will feature the Chancery building, multipurpose event spaces and a new American Center that will host cultural and educational programmes.

Designed by New York-based Ennead Architects and being constructed by U.S.-based Pernix International, the project is expected to further strengthen diplomatic ties between both countries.

According to the U.S. government, the project has injected more than $95 million into Nigeria’s economy through local contractors, suppliers and workers. It has also provided world-class construction training to over 1,500 Nigerian workers, while the project is currently being executed by 120 Nigerian engineers, architects and administrators alongside 43 American construction professionals.
