A 62-year-old Nigerian-American grandmother has been arrested at Lagos airport after operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) allegedly discovered 9.45kg of a cannabis strain known as loud in her luggage following her arrival from the United States.
The suspect, Anetor Gloria Ubong, a realtor based in Richmond, Texas, was arrested on October 21 after arriving aboard a United Airlines flight from Houston.
The NDLEA said a search of her two checked-in boxes revealed 18 parcels of the substance concealed with gift-wrapping paper inside a box.
During interrogation, Ubong allegedly claimed that her daughter and the daughter’s future brother-in-law delivered the package to her residence in the United States for onward delivery in Nigeria to her daughter’s fiancé, identified as Jibola.
The agency did not disclose whether the other individuals allegedly linked to the consignment had been arrested.
The arrest was among several drug-related operations carried out by the NDLEA across the country, resulting in the seizure of different illicit substances and pharmaceutical opioids.
The agency said its investigations would continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the consignment and identify others connected to the alleged trafficking operation.
