The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.
The mission announced the closure in a notice posted on its official X page on Sunday.
Presidents’ Day was originally established to honour the birthday of George Washington, but it is now observed to celebrate all U.S. presidents and their contributions to the nation’s history.
The embassy also highlighted the global influence of U.S. presidents and shared a historical note that George Washington created the first “Badge of Military Merit,” which later evolved into the Purple Heart medal, still bearing Washington’s image today.
Presidents’ Day is observed annually in the United States as a federal holiday.
