Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has honoured seven Super Falcons players and a team official of Imo origin with plots of land in choice areas of Owerri and ₦30 million each for their role in Nigeria’s recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph in Morocco.
The grand homecoming ceremony, held at the Government House in Owerri, drew top government officials, sports stakeholders, and jubilant citizens to celebrate the Falcons’ victory.
Uzodimma said the gesture was part of the state’s efforts to recognise and celebrate the exceptional achievement of its daughters, following President Bola Tinubu’s earlier recognition of the entire national team.
The honoured players are Chiamaka Nnadozie, Jennifer Echegini, Tochukwu Oluchi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, and Ifeoma Onumonu.
“Imo people are proud of our girls and will continue to support them so that more of our own can bring honour to Nigeria and our state,” the governor said, praising President Tinubu for “setting the pace” in rewarding excellence.
He encouraged women and girls to aim for the top in their chosen fields, assuring continued state support for sports development.
Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, commended the governor’s passion for sports and his administration’s investments in the sector, describing the event as a testament to those efforts.
The ceremony was attended by high-ranking political leaders, traditional rulers, prominent Imo personalities, and members of the state’s expanded executive council, who joined in celebrating the athletes’ achievement.
