Veteran Nollywood actor, Clarus of New Masquerade, dies at 85

Davis Ofor, the veteran Nollywood actor who became a household name across Nigeria through his portrayal of Clarus in the classic television sitcom New Masquerade, is dead.

His passing was announced on Tuesday by fellow actor Tony Akposheri in an emotional Instagram post, in which he recalled spending time with Ofor during the New Year celebrations just months before his death.

“Today, my heart is heavy. Davis Ofor, fondly known as Clarus from New Masquerade, is gone,” Akposheri wrote.

“We crossed into the New Year together, laughing, talking, sharing memories, and speaking hopefully about the days ahead.”

Describing Ofor as more than a screen personality, Akposheri paid tribute to his warmth and lasting impact.

“You were more than a familiar face on screen. You were a friend, a brother, a man with warmth, humour, and a presence that could light up any space,” he wrote.

“Rest well, my friend. You came, you gave joy, you made your mark, and you will never be forgotten.”

Ofor rose to national prominence through his role in New Masquerade, one of Nigeria’s most beloved television comedy shows, which aired on the Nigerian Television Authority in the 1980s and became a fixture in homes across the country.

His portrayal of the comic character Clarus earned him widespread recognition and cemented his place as one of the most memorable figures in Nigerian television history.

The cause of his death was not immediately available.
