VIDEO: God’ll punish politicians using power for personal gain ― Obaseki

Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has warned that politicians who use political power for personal gain would face divine punishment, stressing that leadership should be anchored on service to the people.

Speaking in a video shared on X on Friday, December 19, 2025, Obaseki said anyone who seeks power solely for self-interest and that of close associates has failed the purpose of leadership.

According to him, power bestowed by God must be used to serve humanity and glorify Him, not to enrich a privileged few.

The former governor said: “If you are in politics to get power, and you get power only for yourself and your friends, then God will punish you.

“Because if God has given you power, and you cannot use that power to serve Him and glorify Him, then I don’t see how you will do it.

“Power is not merely to enrich yourself or your close circle.

Obaseki further stated that he had no regrets about his tenure in office, adding that he would not change his governing style if given another opportunity.

He noted that he would only act faster and more decisively.

Obaseki also warned against dismantling programmes initiated by his administration, warning that such actions ultimately harm ordinary citizens rather than former leaders.

Obaseki said shutting down public institutions such as hospitals and health insurance schemes deprives vulnerable people of essential services.

“How can somebody gain power today, and sleep well and be happy, seeing that so many people are not able to eat and suffer? What is the purpose? Because God has given you power, you don’t see the purpose,” the former governor added.
