VIDEO: NDLEA seizes drugs hidden in gas tanker in Abuja

The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted 4,752kg of cannabis concealed in a gas tanker along the Abuja-Abaji expressway in the nation’s capital.

The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this via a statement issued on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Babafemi revealed that the NDLEA operatives on a stop and search operation along the Abuja-Abaji highway on Wednesday, May 1, intercepted the 40-ft gas tanker marked RBC 77XG and upon a thorough search discovered 511 jumbo sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 4,752kg concealed in the gas tank compartment of the truck.

He said the consignment was loaded into the tanker in Ondo State and meant to be delivered in Abuja for further distribution.

Babafemi disclosed that four suspects – Efe Abel Mikel, 39; Ebigide Cyril, 29; Ejechi Monday, 41; and Friday Benson Chukwudi, 39 – have been arrested in connection with the seizure.

The NDLEA spokesman added that two suspects, 25-year-old Aminu Umar and 22-year-old Anas Umar, were arrested with 207.1 kilograms of cannabis sativa in their house at Zaria in Kaduna State on Monday, April 29.

He noted that Bashir Umar, 35, was also nabbed at Ladanai in the Hotoro area of Kano on Friday, May 3, with 194 bottles of codeine syrup.

Babafemi stated that the NDLEA operatives, on Wednesday, May 1, arrested an ex-convict, 51-year-old Suleiman Usman who is currently facing trial for another drug offence at the Federal High Court in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

Babafemi said at the time of Usman’s latest arrest at Okinni town in Osun State, the suspect was found in possession of 4.4grams of cocaine, 28.5kg of cannabis sativa, 20 tabs of phenol weighing 6.2grams, and 812 pills of tramadol.

He further revealed that the NDLEA operatives at Agbara checkpoint, Seme border, Badagry in Lagos State, intercepted a Toyota Camry car conveying 113 jumbo parcels of cannabis with a total weight of 64kg on Thursday, May 2.

The NDLEA spokesperson added that the 45-year-old driver, Charles Amoni, was promptly arrested.
