Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has directed all newly appointed commissioners and special advisers to wear the ‘Asiwaju’ cap, which bears the insignia of President Bola Tinubu, during executive council meetings in the state.
Okpebholo issued the directive at the inauguration of commissioners and members of various state commissions held at the Government House in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
The governor stated that the cap — symbolising loyalty to Tinubu — must accompany any traditional attire worn to cabinet meetings, warning that defaulters would be barred from participating in executive sessions.

“If you are wearing traditional dress and you come to the exco without an Asiwaju cap, you’re going back,” Okpebholo declared, drawing applause from attendees.
He credited Tinubu’s support for his victory in the November 2024 governorship election, saying the gesture was a mark of appreciation.
However, the directive has sparked criticism across social media platforms, with many Nigerians describing it as an “unnecessary display of political loyalty.”
