Violence erupts in Kebbi over gold mine

A dispute over a gold mining site has turned deadly in Garin Katta, Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leaving one person dead and several properties destroyed.

The clash, which began on Saturday following a disagreement among miners, escalated on Sunday when relatives of the deceased reportedly staged a reprisal attack.

The unrest resulted in vandalised shops, destroyed property, and several motorcycles set ablaze.

In a swift response, the Chairman of Yauri LGA, Abubakar Shuaibu, announced a dusk-to-dawn curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

He said security agencies, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the military, had been mobilised to restore order in the community.

Police authorities confirmed the recovery and burial of the victim in accordance with Islamic rites.

They added that investigations were ongoing to track down those responsible for the killing.
