The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been handed a lifeline in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign after world football governing body, FIFA, sanctioned the Bafana Bafana of South Africa for fielding an ineligible player.
In a statement issued on Monday, FIFA confirmed that South African midfielder Teboho Mokoena was not eligible to feature in the Group C clash against Lesotho on March 21, 2025.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled that South Africa breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) and Article 14 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations.
As a result, the committee awarded a 3-0 victory to Lesotho, overturning the original result.
South Africa hold Super Eagles in World Cup qualifiers
The ruling means South Africa’s tally has dropped from 17 to 14 points, cutting their lead at the top of Group C and opening up the qualification race.
Nigeria, who currently sit in third place, are now just three points behind South Africa with two matches left to play, offering the Super Eagles renewed hope of securing a spot at the World Cup.
The latest development has added extra drama to the remaining fixtures, as the Super Eagles look to capitalise on the decision and revive their qualification chances.
