The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has corrected errors in the 2025 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) results, with the percentage of candidates obtaining credit passes in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, rising from 38.32% to 62.9%.
Announcing the revision in Lagos on Friday, WAEC’s Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, said 1,239,884 of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat the exams achieved the benchmark, compared to the initially reported 754,545.
Dangut attributed the discrepancy to errors in grading serialised objective papers for Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics.
He explained that a wrong code file was used in scoring the English Language Objective Test (Paper 3), resulting in incorrect marking. Candidates who took the exams via the computer-based mode were not affected.
He apologised for the error, noting that it had contributed to the earlier reported decline in performance.
“The Council sincerely regrets the emotional and mental distress caused to candidates and stakeholders,” Dangut said, adding that the results have now been updated on the WAEC portal.
The revised figures show that 87.24% of candidates obtained credit and above in at least five subjects (with or without English and Mathematics).
WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accuracy in its examination processes.
