Water sector reforms begin to yield results in Kaduna — Commissioner

The Kaduna State Government says sweeping reforms introduced by Governor Uba Sani in the water sector are beginning to produce visible improvements, with a significant rise in water supply recorded across the state in the past month.

The Commissioner for Public Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Ibrahim Hamza, disclosed that water availability has increased markedly following sustained government investment in key facilities.

He assured residents that water supply would further improve once rehabilitation work on the Makera Water Treatment Plant is completed.

In a statement released on Sunday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, the Commissioner revealed that several neighbourhoods, including Tudun Wada, Malali, Unguwan Dosa, Doka Ward, Unguwan Rimi, Barnawa and Narayi, have experienced better water supply since December.

He noted that the rehabilitation of the Malali Water Works to full operational capacity has significantly enhanced water distribution within Kaduna metropolis.

The Commissioner added that water supply would reach even higher levels when the Makera Water Treatment Plant becomes fully functional.

According to him, communities that had endured water shortages for over seven years are now enjoying steady flow from their taps through the efforts of the Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC).

Arc. Hamza also disclosed that both the 150 million litres per day (MLD) and 10 MLD Zaria Water Works are now fully operational.

He said residents of Zaria are currently benefiting from consistent water supply as a result of the restored facilities.

The Commissioner further stated that major repair works have been completed at the Kafanchan Water Treatment Plant.

He confirmed that water supply has been restored not only in Kafanchan town but also in surrounding local government areas.

Arc. Hamza expressed optimism that boreholes would become unnecessary once all water treatment plants across the state are fully operational.

He explained that the government’s goal is to provide reliable piped water that eliminates dependence on alternative sources.

The Commissioner praised Governor Uba Sani for declaring a state of emergency in the water sector in 2023.

He said the declaration paved the way for massive investments, clearance of salary arrears and the appointment of a competent Managing Director for KADSWAC.

Arc. Hamza disclosed that the state plans to invest ₦93 billion over four years to comprehensively rehabilitate the water sector.

He explained that the funding will be released in four tranches to reverse neglect that spanned over 11 years.

According to the Commissioner, the Governor first cleared outstanding salaries and wages of KADSWAC staff amounting to ₦800 million.

He added that the water corporation was also restored to the state payroll.

The Commissioner said the government settled KADSWAC’s electricity debt of ₦1.3 billion to ensure uninterrupted operations.

He further revealed that Engineer Kabir Rufai, a professional with over three decades of experience in the water sector, was appointed as substantive Managing Director of the corporation.

Arc. Hamza stated that the Kaduna State Government has also invested heavily in rehabilitating and retrofitting water treatment plants and distribution networks.

He said the investments place strong emphasis on sanitation, hygiene and sustainable water delivery.

The Commissioner urged residents to pay their water bills promptly to support the reforms.

He also advised KADSWAC staff to remain diligent and committed to their responsibilities to sustain the progress achieved.
