A wedding reception in Nigeria took a dramatic turn after a disagreement between a newly married couple escalated into a physical confrontation in full view of guests.
The incident reportedly occurred during the dance segment of the reception when a young man from the neighbourhood arrived and warmly greeted the bride with a hug.
Sources said the groom had earlier cautioned his wife against associating with the man, making his presence at the event a sensitive issue.
After the guest presented his wedding gift and left, the groom confronted his wife, questioning why the man was invited and insisting that the gift should not be accepted into their home.
The exchange quickly became heated, with the bride pushing back against what she described as controlling behaviour.
“I am your wife, not your slave. You can’t tell me who to associate with,” she was quoted as saying.
The argument escalated further when the groom allegedly slapped the bride, prompting her to retaliate by slapping him back.
The groom then walked away, apparently to cool off, before later leaving the reception entirely and not returning until the event ended.
A video of the altercation has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread reactions and debates among users over who was at fault and raising concerns about how the couple would manage their marriage after such a public dispute.
Netizens expressed mixed views, with some blaming both parties for the confrontation, while others questioned the couple’s preparedness for marriage and suggested that counseling might have prevented the incident.
