Financial breaches

Manchester City have officially lodged an appeal against the Premier League Commission’s ruling in the club’s long-running financial case.

City maintained that the club is innocent of all allegations, noting that the commission’s findings are fundamentally flawed.

The Premier League side, in a statement issued on Friday, said they filed a “comprehensive appeal” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, challenging the opinion issued by the independent commission in the disciplinary proceedings.

City said the commission’s opinion contained “clear material errors” in law, principle and fact, arguing that the findings were unsafe and should be overturned.

City added that they would continue to respect the legal process and would refrain from making further public comments while the appeal remains ongoing.

The statement read: “Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026 the Club lodged its comprehensive Appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter.

“The Club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.

“The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case.

“We will continue to respect due process and are necessarily restricted in what we can say further until all proceedings are complete.”

The appeal comes days after an independent Premier League Commission found City guilty of multiple breaches of the league’s financial regulations dating back more than a decade.

The ruling alleged that the club used disguised commercial arrangements to inflate revenues and understate costs over several seasons, allegations City have consistently denied.

The appeal is expected to trigger another lengthy legal process that could take several months before a final decision is reached. During that period, the uncertainty surrounding the case – and any potential sanctions – will remain unresolved.
