The World Health Organization (WHO) has activated an emergency health response in three flood-affected communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria, following a devastating flood on May 29.
According to WHO, the flooding has led to at least 175 reported deaths, 186 injuries, and the displacement of over 3,000 residents.
More than 13,000 people are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the organization said it is working with partners to support Nigerian authorities in scaling up emergency health interventions in the region.
A public health risk assessment is currently underway to monitor and respond to potential outbreaks of epidemic-prone diseases and other health threats.

WHO also announced plans to dispatch emergency medical supplies and equipment to reinforce primary healthcare services in the affected communities.
“In response to the catastrophic flooding in Niger State, WHO and partners are supporting the authorities in scaling up emergency health response,” the organization stated.
“We are preparing to send emergency medical supplies and equipment to support primary health care.”
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also begun distributing relief materials to affected residents.
The agency is collaborating with community leaders to compile lists of the deceased and missing to aid in documentation, investigation, and further assistance.
In a show of solidarity, Fatima Umar-Bago, wife of the Niger State Governor, visited the impacted communities on Monday to commiserate with victims.
She, along with members of her entourage, delivered additional relief materials and medical supplies to those affected.
The flood has been described as one of the deadliest in recent years in the region, prompting urgent calls for coordinated relief and long-term solutions to prevent future disasters.
