Why Egbetokun resigned as IG – Presidency

The Presidency has confirmed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police, stating that he stepped down due to family matters requiring his full attention.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this while responding to an inquiry, noting that the former police chief submitted a resignation letter citing personal issues.

However, multiple Presidency sources indicated that Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Monday evening.

According to officials familiar with the development, the meeting was not routine, as the police boss was specifically summoned by the President. Observers reported that Egbetokun arrived at the Villa around 6:40 p.m. in his official vehicle and later returned at about 8:00 p.m., when security operatives conducted standard checks.

Sources said his visit coincided with the arrival of governors for an interfaith breaking of fast with the President, initially creating uncertainty about the purpose of his presence.

Egbetokun, who was appointed Inspector-General on June 19, 2023, led the Nigeria Police Force during a period marked by growing security concerns, including kidnappings, banditry, and terrorist attacks across several states.

Notable incidents during his tenure included mass abductions of schoolchildren, attacks on communities, and persistent kidnappings along major highways.

During the same Iftar meeting with governors, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to establishing state police as part of broader efforts to address insecurity, describing security as essential for economic growth and social stability.

Before becoming IGP, Egbetokun served as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and succeeded Usman Alkali Baba following the expiration and extension of his predecessor’s tenure.

Authorities say the resignation takes immediate effect, while further announcements on leadership succession are expected.
