Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially confirmed his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move is in the best interest of the people of the state.
Speaking on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Diri described his defection as a tough but necessary decision aimed at ensuring continued development and stability in Bayelsa.
“As a leader, there comes a time when one must take difficult decisions for the greater good.
“Some may not understand why I am taking this step today, but in due time, the reasons will become clear,” the governor said.
He stressed that politics should be about service and delivering development, adding that his administration remains committed to improving the lives of Bayelsans and sustaining the dividends of democracy.
“The peace and security we currently enjoy in Bayelsa are blessings we must preserve and build upon,” Diri added.
Sources had earlier reported that Governor Diri would formally declare for the APC on Monday, following weeks of behind-the-scenes consultations and negotiations with top figures within the ruling party.
According to The Cable, the governor had resigned from the PDP on October 15, paving the way for his eventual defection.
Diri’s exit marks another major loss for the PDP, which has in recent months witnessed a string of high-profile defections that have weakened its influence across the country.
Within the past year, governors Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, and Peter Mbah of Enugu have also defected to the APC.
