Wike, BoT members hopeful of peace in PDP

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has reiterated that he would not leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) amidst the crisis bedevilling the party ahead of the 2023 general election.

Wike said this while speaking to newsmen shortly after a meeting with the members of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Tuesday.

Governor Wike stated that he was committed to achieving peace within the main opposition party, saying: “The most important thing is to have peace. The house is united. I am hopeful we will resolve the issues because I am alive.

“Only those who are alive are hopeful. We have said repeatedly that we will not leave the party. We believe the internal issues will be resolved,” the governor said.

Also speaking to journalists, the PDP BoT Acting Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, said progress was made at the meeting.

“We have not concluded. Making peace is difficult. But we have heard from his side. The family remains one. We shall achieve peace very soon.

“We are better informed. We have gotten some new information. Every coin has two sides. In concrete terms, it is a work in progress,” Wabara said.

Governor Wike has been at loggerheads with the PDP National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, over calls for the latter’s resignation.

The governor and his loyalists had called for the resignation of Ayu as a condition to campaign for the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2023 polls, adding that the party’s chairman should step down for a southerner.

Wike and his allies, on September 20, announced their withdrawal from the PDP presidential campaign council.

They also boycotted the inauguration of the party’s campaign council held on September 28 in Abuja.
