The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday launched the Light Up Abuja Project, aimed at installing integrated hybrid solar streetlights across key districts and expressways in the nation’s capital.
The project, divided into two lots, will cover major parts of Abuja.
Lot 1 will focus on Maitama, Central Area, Wuse, Asokoro, and the Airport Expressway, while Lot 2 will span Katampe, Katampe Extension, Jabi, Garki, Gudu, and Mabushi.
According to project details, the initiative will involve the supply and installation of 300W hybrid solar-powered streetlights, with luminous flux capacity ranging from 7,500lm to 17,500lm.
The scope also includes retrofitting existing streetlights, installing galvanized poles at new sites, and replacing vandalized or damaged ones.
A key feature of the new system is the integration of surveillance modules and a centralized control room, designed to monitor the lights in real time and capture any attempts at vandalism.
The Light Up Abuja Project is expected to be completed within six months.
