Wike hails progress on Abuja projects, pushes satellite development

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of ongoing infrastructure projects in Abuja, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding development to satellite communities.

Speaking during an inspection tour, Wike said several projects, including the Body of Benchers annex building and key road networks, are nearing completion and will be inaugurated as part of activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the minister, work on the Body of Benchers annex has reached about 95 per cent completion, with furniture already installed and only minor finishing touches left.

He also inspected the access road to the complex being handled by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, commending the contractor for delivering the project on schedule and to high standards. He noted that streetlight installation is ongoing and the road will be among projects slated for inauguration.

Wike further visited the Tudun Wada road linking Old Ushafa Road, stating that final works, including asphalt laying and streetlight installation, would be completed within days.

The minister emphasised that the administration’s priority is to extend infrastructure beyond the city centre to underserved communities, highlighting ongoing expansion towards areas such as Zuba.

“My greatest happiness is that we are opening up satellite communities. That is what development is all about,” he said.

He praised contractors for adhering to timelines while maintaining quality, noting that their performance reflects the administration’s commitment to delivering impactful projects.

Addressing concerns over alleged underutilisation of funds by Area Councils, Wike dismissed the claims, stating that many councils face significant financial pressure, particularly from salary obligations such as teachers’ wages.

He urged critics to base their claims on facts, insisting that the FCT Administration remains focused on improving infrastructure across the territory.

Wike also expressed satisfaction with the ongoing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries, noting that the process has been conducted smoothly with the presence of officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
