Wike launches Clean Air scheme, gives 5,000 homes free gas cylinders

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has rolled out its Breathe Clean Air Initiative, under which 5,000 households will receive free gas cylinders and a six-month cooking gas refill to promote cleaner, safer cooking.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Health and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, said the intervention aims to curb harmful household emissions and improve family health, especially for women who suffer the most from indoor pollution.

She said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike remains committed to improving living standards and environmental health in the territory.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Babagena Adams said the project will reduce health risks for pregnant women and boost community productivity, while IHS Nigeria CEO, Mohammed Darwish, noted that prolonged use of firewood and charcoal exposes families to toxic fumes and lung diseases.

Stakeholders, including medical experts and civil groups, praised the initiative as a major step toward reducing pollution-related illnesses and protecting the environment.

The FCTA said wider adoption of cooking gas will help cut deforestation, improve air quality and support a safer, healthier FCT.
