Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that genuine opposition strength in Nigeria is built through electoral success rather than alliances formed out of convenience.
Wike made the remark on Friday during a visit to the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja, where he also pledged his support to the party’s newly constituted National Working Committee.
He dismissed claims by emerging political groups seeking to position themselves as major opposition players, arguing that credibility can only come from winning elections.
According to him, any party that has not secured victories at the polls cannot lay claim to leading the opposition.
His comments come as political actors begin to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, with shifting alliances and renewed competition among parties.
Reiterating his commitment to the PDP, Wike said his presence at the party headquarters was a show of solidarity with the new leadership and a signal of his readiness to contribute to rebuilding efforts.
He admitted the party had gone through internal challenges but expressed optimism that it was gradually stabilising.
Wike urged the leadership to focus on reconciliation, especially by reconnecting with former members who have left the party but may still be interested in returning. He noted that many defections were driven by concerns over political opportunities, particularly access to party tickets.
He also warned against losing focus due to ongoing legal disputes, expressing confidence that the party would overcome its challenges.
Responding, PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the new leadership is committed to repositioning the party and regaining public trust.
He maintained that the PDP remains a strong platform capable of reclaiming national leadership and pledged that the party would intensify efforts to secure electoral victories in 2027.
Similarly, National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, described Wike’s visit as a morale booster for the leadership, noting that his continued backing reinforces confidence within the party.
The visit highlights ongoing moves within the PDP to rebuild its structure and re-establish itself as a leading opposition force amid evolving political dynamics.
