The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that backing Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for a second term would spell political disaster for him and his supporters.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday, January 3, 2025, Wike said a clear political decision had already been reached ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former governor of Rivers State stressed that while his political camp is firmly committed to supporting President Bola Tinubu, Governor Fubara would not enjoy the same support.
“We have made our decision. Tinubu is non-negotiable. But as for the other one (Fubara), it cannot happen. If we repeat the mistake of the past, we will destroy ourselves politically. I will not allow that mistake again,” he said.
The minister’s remarks follow a growing rift between him and Fubara, which intensified after the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last month.
Wike accused Fubara of breaching the terms of a peace agreement that paved the way for the lifting of emergency rule in Rivers State and the governor’s reinstatement.
Earlier, the minister had described the emergence of Fubara as governor as a “leadership error,” adding that it would be corrected in 2027.
He said details of the agreement that restored Fubara’s mandate would be disclosed at a later date.
