The Delta State Police Command has arrested a woman for allegedly selling her two-month-old baby, the command confirmed on Friday in Warri.
Police Spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspect, Rita Ughale, reportedly staged the abduction of her child on Monday along Ekpan Link Road in Uvwie Local Government Area.
According to Edafe, Ughale initially reported to the Ekpan Police Division that her baby was snatched during a robbery while she was traveling in a tricycle.
“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Labe Joseph, immediately mobilized operatives and coordinated a swift search and rescue operation,” he said.
However, inconsistencies in her story and suspicious behavior during questioning led investigators to conduct further interrogation. Ughale eventually admitted that she had orchestrated the abduction and sold her baby to a couple for N1.5 million.
The police confirmed that the buyers have been arrested and the infant successfully rescued. The suspects are currently in police custody, while investigations continue.
Edafe added that the command is intensifying efforts to apprehend any additional accomplices involved in the crime for prosecution.
