Woman slumps, dies at Accord Party primaries in Osun

A woman, identified as Taliat Simbiat, has been confirmed dead during the Accord Party primary election in Iwo, Osun State.

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress made this known in a statement issued by the Head of Media and Publicity of the APC Governorship Campaign Council, Remi Omowaiye, on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

Omowaiye, who called for a thorough investigation into the death of the woman, alleged that the primary election was marred by violence and injuries.

Omowaiye alleged that the primary election for the Ayedire/Iwo/Olaoluwa Federal Constituency descended into chaos, resulting in casualties and damage to property.

Omowaiye said reports from various parts of Osun State showed that several people sustained injuries during the exercise, while one person lost her life.

He described party primaries as a crucial democratic process that should allow members to freely choose their candidates without intimidation or violence.

The Osun APC spokesman specifically identified the deceased as Taliat Simbiat, a resident of Ward 3 in Iwo, alleging that she died amid disturbances linked to the primary election.

He further claimed that about 30 people were injured during the incident.

Omowaiye urged security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.

He also called on Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to support efforts aimed at uncovering the truth behind the incident.

However, the state government rejected the APC’s account, insisting that the deceased was not killed during any violent clash.

Responding through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke expressed grief over Simbiat’s death and extended condolences to her family and associates.

The governor said the woman slumped and died during the primary election, describing her as a loyal supporter and one of the administration’s strong advocates in Iwo and surrounding communities.

Adeleke noted that her passing was a painful loss and prayed for strength for her family and loved ones to bear the tragedy.

He also dismissed allegations that his administration shields political thugs, maintaining that he has consistently promoted peaceful political engagement throughout his career.

Adeleke commended members of the Accord Party for what he described as their peaceful conduct during the primary exercise and reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state.

Adeleke further accused his critics of attempting to distort the facts, arguing that those making allegations of political violence were themselves known for using such tactics to pursue political interests.
