Federal civil servants have urged the Federal Government to promptly settle the outstanding three months of the N35,000 wage award, citing rising living costs and growing frustration over the prolonged delay.
Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, several workers criticised the government for what they described as an unnecessary and unexplained lag in meeting its commitment.
Dr. Uche Anune said the government should not wait for public outcry before taking action.
“I see a pattern where the government becomes relaxed until workers start agitating or protesting. That shouldn’t be the case,” he said.
Another worker, Joseph Edeh, expressed disappointment, saying the delay had undermined confidence in the government’s sincerity.
“Honestly, I have lost faith. They told us five months were outstanding, paid two, and suddenly stopped. Why treat workers this way? They should clear the three months at once,” he said.
Miss Franca Ofili stressed that the payment would significantly ease financial stress.
“That N35,000 can solve many problems. The government should fulfil its promise and pay the arrears at once,” she appealed.
Responding, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation said the government remained committed to settling the remaining arrears, but noted that payment would depend on the availability of funds.
OAGF spokesperson Bawa Mokwa clarified that the government had not abandoned the wage award.
“With the second tranche paid in August, three instalments remain.
“The Federal Government will continue paying N35,000 monthly until the arrears are fully cleared,” he said.
