Sidney Holmes, a Florida man who spent 34 years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, has been awarded $1.7 million in compensation following his exoneration in 2023.
Holmes was convicted in 1989 and handed a staggering 400-year sentence for allegedly serving as a getaway driver in a robbery — despite the case being built on flimsy evidence.
Decades later, a reinvestigation uncovered new findings that proved his innocence, leading to his release.

Now 58, Holmes has turned his experience into advocacy, calling for systemic reforms to prevent wrongful convictions.
“I refuse to let them take my purpose,” he said, vowing to use his voice to fight for justice.
