The Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) has secured research grants worth over ₦62.9 million from the TETFund/National Research Fund for two innovative projects.
In a statement on Monday, the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Centre for Information, Communication and Public Relations, Adekunle Adams, described the development as a milestone that reinforces Yabatech’s leadership in technological innovation and applied research.
Dr. Emodi Izuchukwu of the School of Art, Design and Printing received ₦24.1 million to fund his project, Transforming Marine Pollution into Art, which aims to convert marine waste into creative artworks. The initiative, Adams said, promotes environmental sustainability while advancing Nigeria’s blue economy and cultural renewal.
Izuchukwu will lead a multidisciplinary team comprising Chinyere Ndubuisi, Emmanuel Irokanulo, Florence Nweke, and Adenike Ezeagwu.
Similarly, Dr. Akin Olaleru of the School of Engineering was awarded ₦38.8 million for pioneering research on hybrid perovskite semiconductors to enhance photovoltaic devices. His team — Olufunke Oyebamiji, Olasoji Adekoya, and Matthew Solomon — will focus on boosting Nigeria’s solar energy capacity through clean and sustainable technologies.
“These landmark awards highlight Yabatech’s growing influence in tackling global challenges through sustainability and technological innovation,” Adams said, stressing the role of applied research in driving national development, industry transformation, and environmental protection.
Congratulating the beneficiaries, the management of Yabatech said the grants reaffirm the college’s vision of delivering practical solutions to real-world problems.
“With these projects, Yabatech continues to shape Nigeria’s future through innovation, creativity, and groundbreaking scientific exploration,” Adams added.
