‘You’re probably drinking shit water’: Lagos govt warns Lekki residents against borehole

The Lagos State Government has warned residents of Lekki against drilling boreholes in the area.

The Permanent Secretary in the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources in Lagos State, Mahmood Adegbite, gave the warning at a stakeholders meeting held recently in the state.

Adegbite said contaminated boreholes in Lekki pose health risks, noting that the contaminated water is laden with faecal matter.

Adegbite said: “On wastewater treatment, I will say that everyone digging a borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water.’

“However, if we are able to treat all the wastewater within this axis, which we have plans for, we should be able to also eradicate any form of disease that might result as result of non-treatment of our waste”

On flooding challenges in the area, Adegbite acknowledged the government’s efforts but noted that more needs to be done.

“Despite the fact that we have committed so much, we still need to do a lot in that space,” he added.

Lagosians recently bemoaned worsening floods following torrential rainfall in the state.

The Lagos State Government has warned that more rainfall and flash floods are expected across the city in the coming days.
