Zenith Bank loses N376m to fraud in six months

Zenith Bank Plc lost N376m to fraud and forgeries in the first half of 2026, with 171 cases recorded during the six-month period ended June 30.

The bank disclosed this in its second-quarter financial statement filed on the Nigerian Exchange Group on Tuesday, stating that the losses resulted from reported fraud incidents during the period.

The report also showed that the bank received 7,914 customer complaints as of June 30 and resolved 6,780 of them.

The complaints generated claims totalling N67.2bn, lower than the N92.77bn recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

Zenith Bank said it had complied with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirements for monthly returns on fraud and forgeries under Section 24 of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act 2020 and relevant regulatory guidelines.

Despite the fraud losses, the bank recorded a profit before tax of N637.6bn in the first half of 2026, up from N625.6bn in the corresponding period of 2025.

However, its profit after tax fell to N430.7bn from N532bn, while tax expenses rose to N206.8bn from N93bn.

The bank’s gross earnings also declined to N1.899bn from N2.5bn, according to the report.
