Zulum bans illegal tree felling, enforces monthly sanitation

In a bid to protect Borno State’s environment and improve public health, Governor Babagana Zulum has signed two executive orders aimed at curbing environmental degradation and enhancing sanitation.

The first executive order prohibits indiscriminate tree felling across the state, while the second mandates a monthly statewide sanitation exercise.

Both orders were signed during a brief ceremony held on Friday at the Government House in Maiduguri.

Governor Zulum expressed concern over the rising environmental abuse, particularly the rampant cutting of trees, and stressed the need to preserve the ecosystem for future generations.

“By the authority vested in me under Section 14 (2) and Section 20 of the Nigerian Constitution, and the Felling of Tree Law, Cap 53, Laws of Borno State, I hereby prohibit unlawful tree felling with immediate effect,” Zulum declared.

Violators will face stiff penalties: a first-time offence attracts a fine of N250,000 or up to three years in prison. Repeat offenders risk a fine of N500,000 or imprisonment of up to five years—or both.

The second executive order establishes the first Saturday of every month as Sanitation Day, making community-wide participation in environmental cleaning compulsory.

Offenders of the sanitation order will face up to two years in prison or a fine of N100,000 for a first offence. Repeat offenders could face up to five years’ imprisonment.

“These measures are crucial for enhancing public health, reducing disease outbreaks, and ensuring a cleaner, safer environment for all,” the governor said.

Governor Zulum also revealed plans to sign another executive order soon, which will impose strict penalties on those violating existing laws on scrap metal scavenging and trading.

He has directed the Borno State Police Command and relevant agencies to ensure full enforcement and compliance with the new executive orders.
