10 arrested for killing policeman in Borno

The officers of the Borno State Police Command have arrested 10 suspects for allegedly killing a policeman, Babagana Mala, attached to the command`s Crack Unit.

The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yiususf Mohammed, made this known while addressing journalists on the arrest in Maiduguri, the state capital, on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

The police commissioner, who disclosed that 78 others were also arrested for other crimes, said the suspects stabbed Mala, a Constable, with a sharp object on his back.

Mohammed said: “On receipt of a distress call, the police patrol team responded and rescued the victim to Maiduguri Specialist Hospital for treatment where he was later certified dead.

“Police undercover operatives obtained a video clip of the incident from a good Samaritan which led to the arrest of the suspects – Usman Audu, Hauwa Usman, Aisha Musa, Abba Bala, Sunday Garba, David Paul, Mohammed Abubakar, Jude Eze, Amaechi Abdulsalam, and Nduibuse Nnaji.”

He said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution.

The police commissioner said other suspects were also arrested in various raids on black spots within the metropolis, including a syndicate of four ladies and a man suspected to specialise in shoplifting.

“The command has taken bold steps to checkmate youth’s involvement in violent crime, criminalities, and anti-social behaviour.

“This will reduce the fear of committing crime and improve quality of life and ease of doing business, particularly in Maiduguri metropolis and beyond,” Mohammed added.

He, however, enjoined parents to always show keen interest on the type of friends and peer groups their children/wards associate with, urging the people of Borno State to always give the police timely information on the activities of criminals hibernating in their neighbourhoods.
