2 gunmen killed, one officer injured as security operatives foil attack on checkpoint

The Joint Security Force in Anambra State has repelled an attack on a security checkpoint at Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

One security officer was injured, while two gunmen were neutralised by the security operatives.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Ikenga said the incident occurred in the late hours of Thursday.

He stated that during the ensuing gun battle, due to the superior firepower of the team, the gunmen abandoned one of their operational vehicles, a Toyota Sienna and fled the scene.

The police spokesman said: “One of the Anambra Joint Security Team in the late evening of May 15, 2025, resisted an attack by armed criminals at the security checkpoint in Isuofia. Two of the armed hoodlums were neutralised in the process.

”Regrettably, one of the security operatives was fatally wounded, while one of the security operational vehicles was burnt by the bandits.

”The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act and viewed it as a test of the people’s collective resolve to work with the security forces to dislodge and eliminate criminal elements in the state.”

Ikenga quoted Orutugu as assuring residents of Anambra State that the command would apprehend the perpetrators behind the act.

The police spokesperson added that calm has returned to the area, noting that more armed operatives are currently combing nearby bushes for possible arrest of the fleeing miscreants.
