The death toll in a gas explosion that occurred in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State on Tuesday morning has increased to nine.

This was disclosed by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs via its verified Twitter handle on Tuesday.

In a series of tweets, the ministry noted that the Director-General of the National Emergency Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Habib Ahmed, has arrived at the scene of the gas explosion.

It added that two persons who were injured have been taken to Airforce Hospital in Kano.

The ministry stated: “9 dead bodies have been recovered so far from the rubble of a collapsed building beside a primary school following explosions from gas cylinder at Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano.

“NEMA DG, Mustapha Habib Ahme, was at the site of the incident and coordinated the rescue operations.

“NEMA is presently coordinating the rescue operations with sister agencies.

“Two persons injured by the explosion were taken for treatment at Airforce Hospital, Kano.

“The rescue operation has been concluded following the complete removal of the rubble from the location.”

The Star had earlier reported that the Kano State Government clarified that the explosion in the Sabon Gari area did not occur in a school.

The state Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, said the incident happened at an animal feed store opposite the school along Aba Road, Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government.

Garba called on the people in the state, particularly those living in the area where the incident occurred, to remain calm while the government in collaboration with relevant agencies are working on the matter.

The commissioner assured that government would keep the public abreast on any development and warned people to desist from spreading unsubstantiated news.
