2 police officers injured as mob attacks intelligence operatives in Edo

Two operatives of the Nigeria Police Force’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT), under the Force Intelligence Department, were seriously injured on Monday after being attacked by a mob in Edo State.

The incident occurred at Okhuimwun Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area as the officers were traveling from Lagos to Benin City for an official assignment.

According to eyewitnesses, the officers encountered a large group of individuals—numbering in the hundreds—who had blocked the road near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis.

The mob reportedly assaulted the officers with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects, resulting in severe injuries to two of the operatives.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force condemned the attack, labeling it as “provocative and unlawful.”

Force spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi praised the officers for showing restraint by not retaliating with force despite the life-threatening situation.

“The injured officers are currently receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition,” Adejobi confirmed.

He further stated that a full investigation has been launched to identify and prosecute those responsible for the assault.

The police also issued a stern warning against attacks on law enforcement personnel, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated.

“The Nigeria Police Force warns against acts of lawlessness and aggression toward its officers, who are dedicated to maintaining public safety.

“Those found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” Adejobi added.
