The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday, failed to release the name of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State for the 2023 governorship election in the state.

INEC had earlier in the day released the names of candidates and running mates of various political parties vying for different positions in 2023 with that of the Delta PDP candidates missing.

The Star recalls that the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on July 7, 2022, sacked the party’s governorship candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori, ahead of the 2023 gubernatorial election in the state.

The court nullified Oborevwori’s candidacy for the 2023 governorship election, citing discrepancies in his documents.

The presiding judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo, directed INEC and the PDP to recognise David Edevbie as the governorship candidate of the PDP.

Oborevwori is the incumbent Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, while Edevbie is the former Chief of Staff to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Speaking on the development, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in Delta State, Monday Udoh-Tom, said there were presently no particulars of any candidate for PDP.

Udoh-Tom said: “We have no particulars of any candidate for PDP as far as the governorship is concerned because they are in court. It is when the matter is determined that we will now have the particulars of one of them.

“You will recall that there was a court judgement that disqualified one of them, and he filed for stay of execution and also appealed the judgement.

“As a result, we cannot act on the case of the PDP for now until the Appeal Court delivers judgement,” he stated.
