2025/2026 session: UNIBEN admits over 15,000 students for first time

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State has admitted 15,077 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, marking an unprecedented intake in the history of the institution.

The UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN), disclosed this while speaking at the matriculation ceremony in Benin, the capital of Edo State, on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Omoregie said the matriculation was particularly significant as many of the fresh students were pioneers of about 20 newly introduced courses and programmes.

The UNIBEN VC emphasised that the students were admitted strictly on merit and urged them to uphold excellence throughout their academic stay.

“You have been admitted on merit. Therefore, merit and excellence should be your watch words in your academic sojourn here at the University of Benin,” Omoregie stated.

Describing UNIBEN as a first-generation university and one of the most sought-after in Sub-Saharan Africa, Omoregie said the institution had, over the past 55 years, sustained its reputation for quality teaching, learning, and impactful research.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that these values were captured in the university’s motto, ‘Knowledge for Service’.

He added that the institution was committed to producing graduates who would be valuable to both themselves and society.

Omoregie warned the students against engaging in cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice and other social vices, stressing that the UNIBEN management maintained a zero-tolerance policy.

Omoregie said: “The University of Benin forbids you to engage in activities associated with secret cults, selling and use of illicit drugs, alcohol, prostitution, examination malpractice and all forms of immorality as well as social vices.

“Anyone caught will be shown the way out.”

He urged the matriculating students to remain focused, engage constructively with lecturers and staff, and make effective use of the institution’s academic, sporting, and extracurricular facilities.
