2027: Anti-Tinubu coalition doomed to fail — Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has strongly condemned the recently-formed coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, declaring that the alliance is destined to fail.

Speaking with journalists and political stakeholders in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu described the coalition as a “distraction” that the president should ignore, warning that Nigerians will not support any effort to reverse the progress made under Tinubu’s leadership.

“Nigerians will never go back to Egypt,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“The target is to distract the Commander-in-Chief and derail the social and economic gains that we can see and feel.

“But President Tinubu knows the game and will not fall for their bait.”

The coalition, reportedly composed of prominent politicians including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, has aligned under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Despite the stature of its members, Sanwo-Olu dismissed the movement as an alliance of “disgruntled politicians” lacking substance.

Highlighting President Tinubu’s track record, the Lagos governor praised the administration’s reform efforts, pointing to the stabilization of the foreign exchange market, the student loan scheme, massive infrastructural development, increased oil production, tax reforms, more revenue for states following the fuel subsidy removal, and efforts toward a new national minimum wage.

“President Tinubu is not only a builder of men but a visionary leader whose impact is evident across the nation,” Sanwo-Olu said.

When asked whether the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was concerned about the ADC-backed coalition, he replied:

“No one should be concerned or distracted by what ADC or any other group is trying to orchestrate. The truth is clear. The people can see the difference, and history is on the President’s side.”

Echoing sentiments from presidential aides, Sanwo-Olu described members of the opposition coalition as “internally displaced politicians” and “a gathering of desperados” united by resentment rather than ideology.

“They have nothing but bitterness to offer,” he said. “They will run out of steam.”

Offering advice to the President, Sanwo-Olu urged Tinubu to remain focused on delivering results:

“Millions of well-meaning Nigerians across party lines are solidly behind the President.

“They understand what it takes to govern the most populous Black nation and to revive a struggling economy.

“The focus must remain on deepening reforms and building a stronger Nigeria. Any attempt to derail that mission will be futile.”

As political rhetoric intensifies ahead of 2027, Sanwo-Olu called for calm, unity, and sustained public confidence in Tinubu’s leadership.
