Former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, says the 2027 general elections will be one of the toughest in Nigeria’s history, adding that his party is open to alliances with other political forces.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso said the NNPP is prepared to collaborate with any political party or individual committed to improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
“We’re ready for anyone — APC, PDP, ADC, Jonathan, or Peter Obi. If we are convinced of their competence and integrity, we’ll join forces with them to achieve success,” Kwankwaso said.
“But if they fail to meet our expectations, we will not continue with them.”
He stressed that any alliance must be built on shared values and a clear commitment to the needs of the masses.
“What we are asking for is that the common people should benefit — that the youth should be educated, and security should be restored.
“People are being killed in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and other states, while the elites live comfortably in Abuja,” he added.
The NNPP leader also criticised political officeholders who, according to him, focus on self-enrichment rather than service to the nation.
“Many lawmakers and ministers are only interested in buying big houses and luxurious cars.
“They behave as if they are untouchable, but Allah will judge them,” he said.
Kwankwaso reaffirmed his party’s readiness to work with the All Progressives Congress (APC), but only under conditions that would guarantee tangible benefits for the NNPP and its members.
“If you are asking us to join APC, you must tell us what NNPP will gain. We have candidates and structures across all states.
“What will you offer them if we join?” he asked during a recent meeting with defectors from the APC in Kano.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has met with Kwankwaso several times since 2023, has previously described him as a friend within the progressive fold.
Looking ahead, Kwankwaso predicted that the 2027 elections will be fiercely contested, as Nigerians have become more politically aware and determined to demand change.
“I believe the 2027 elections will be much tougher.
“People are now more involved, more informed, and more determined to secure a better future,” he said.
“This time, voters won’t wait for handouts on election day.
“We may witness new developments that have never happened in Nigeria’s political history.”
