Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has identified security and credible elections as critical factors that will determine Nigeria’s future as the country prepares for the 2027 general election.
Sanwo-Olu stated this on Thursday at the Freedom Online 7th Yearly Lecture in Lagos, where he spoke on the theme, “2027 Elections: Economy, Security and Nigeria’s Future.”
The governor said security remained the foundation for economic development, arguing that no nation could attract investment or achieve sustainable growth without protecting lives and property.
“Security is not merely a matter for the military, police and other agencies. It is also an essential part of economic infrastructure,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu stated that insecurity affects agriculture, transportation, investment and business growth, noting that farmers cannot produce effectively when they are afraid to access their farms.
Sanwo-Olu also called for the completion of ongoing efforts to establish state police, describing it as one of the most important security reforms Nigeria could undertake.
Speaking from his experience governing Lagos, he said community-based security structures had proven effective in improving safety.
“The lesson of two decades is not complicated. Security works best when the people who pay for it and the people who depend on it can see, and hold to account, the people who provide it,” he said.
The governor commended President Bola Tinubu’s security measures, including the expansion of the Nigerian Army, establishment of new commands and increased focus on intelligence coordination.
Sanwo-Olu said improved security would also be necessary for a successful 2027 election, warning that insecurity could affect campaigns, voter participation and the movement of electoral officials and materials.
Sanwo-Olu urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to prepare early to guarantee a peaceful and credible election.
On democracy, the governor said Nigeria had made significant progress since the return of civilian rule in 1999, describing the country’s uninterrupted electoral process as a major achievement.

He recalled that the 2027 election would mark the eighth consecutive general election in the Fourth Republic, adding that Nigeria’s democratic journey should be protected.
Sanwo-Olu also called on the media to play a responsible role ahead of the elections by promoting factual reporting and countering misinformation.
“I am not asking for a compliant press. A compliant press is of no use to a democracy. I am asking for a rigorous press,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu urged journalists to verify claims, challenge misinformation and focus on issues that affect Nigerians rather than promoting division.
The governor expressed confidence that Nigeria would emerge stronger after the 2027 elections, saying the country must work collectively to build a more secure, prosperous and democratic future.
