Four people were confirmed dead after a tragic accident during the 2025 Eggon Cultural Carnival on Sunday in Nassarawa Eggon town, Nasarawa State.
The incident occurred near Eggon Community Secondary School when a truck reportedly lost control and crashed into participants in the carnival procession, killing three people on the spot. Two other trucks later collided at the scene, leading to further chaos and additional injuries.
Witnesses said many others sustained various injuries as a result of the multiple crashes.
Confirming the incident, the Nasarawa State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Yahaya Sabo-Adikwu, explained that the first truck ran into the procession as it moved from the Palace of Aren Eggon, Justice Ahmed Ubangari Alaku (Rtd), toward the community secondary school. He blamed the accident on reckless driving, adding that the bodies of the deceased had been taken to the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital mortuary.
Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, expressed deep shock over the tragedy. In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Peter Ahemba, the governor described the incident as a dark moment for the Eggon people and the entire state. He offered condolences to the Aren Eggon, the families of the victims, and the Eggon community, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
He noted that the cancellation of the carnival reflected the seriousness of the situation and the organisers’ respect for the victims and their families.
