Zamfara State University, Talata-Mafara, has achieved a major academic milestone as the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted full and interim accreditation to all 28 of its academic programmes.
The accreditation exercise, carried out between February 16 and 26, 2025, was part of the NUC’s nationwide assessment of academic offerings in Nigerian universities.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Yahya A. Zakari, announced the achievement in a statement released to journalists in Sokoto on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
He revealed that 20 of the programmes received full accreditation, while the remaining eight were granted interim status.
“This is a testament to the institution’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and quality education,” Professor Zakari said, expressing pride on behalf of the university’s Management and Senate.
Programmes that received full accreditation include core health and science disciplines such as Nursing Science, Public Health, Physiotherapy, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Computer Science.
Other accredited courses include Biology, Geology, Mass Communication, Economics, and Electronics.
Humanities and education programmes also performed well, with History and International Studies, English, Islamic Studies, Primary Education, and Early Childhood Education receiving strong recognition.
Prof. Zakari commended the support of the Zamfara State Government, particularly Governor Dauda Lawal, whose commitment and resource allocation were instrumental in meeting NUC standards.
“The governor’s proactive engagement significantly contributed to this success,” he noted.
The university’s leadership also acknowledged the dedication of faculty, staff, and students whose collective efforts ensured the smooth execution of the rigorous accreditation process.
Describing the achievement as a turning point for the institution, Zakari stated that the accreditation boosts the university’s credibility, enhances student confidence, and positions it for national and international academic collaborations.
He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to continuous improvement, infrastructure development, and academic expansion, with the goal of becoming a leading center for learning and research in Nigeria and beyond.
