DJ Cuppy

Nigerian disc jockey Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has explained why she is abandoning the pink-themed appearance that defined her public image for 17 years, saying she no longer wants to be confined to a single colour.

The entertainer said her decision to embrace other colours reflects personal growth and an evolving sense of style, rather than a departure from the values she associated with pink.

Cuppy, who became widely recognised for her pink hair, outfits and accessories, disclosed this in an interview with GQ Poland.

She said many people had questioned her decision to move away from the distinctive appearance that became synonymous with her brand.

According to the DJ, pink represented power, vibrancy, self-expression and confidence, but she now feels free to communicate those qualities through different colours.

“I was known for the colour pink, and it was my identity for so many years, and a lot of people are asking what happened to the pink.

“I want people to understand that actually growth is something that will always come, and I don’t think I should be boxed into a colour.

“Pink for me meant power, vibrancy, expression, unapologeticness, positionality, and that’s still me, but I’m able to express it through other colours as well,” she said.

The DJ also linked her fashion choices to her experience as a woman navigating the male-dominated music industry.

She explained that when she began her career 17 years ago, her pink-themed appearance was a way of embracing her femininity while establishing herself in the industry.

“When I think about my style, I think about a woman in a male-dominated industry. Maybe also when I first started 17 years ago, a young girl who was using pink to represent her femininity and stay in the room.

“Now that I’ve been through a lot of doors and kicked down some windows, I feel like I can represent my femininity through any colour,” she added.

Cuppy’s remarks suggest that while she is exploring a new fashion direction, the confidence, individuality and self-expression associated with her pink identity remain central to her personality.

The entertainer has maintained a distinctive public image throughout her career, with her pink-themed appearance becoming one of the most recognisable features of her brand.
