A police inspector deployed on special duty in Sarkin-Pawa, Munya Local Government Area of Niger State, reportedly took his own life in the early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Inspector Bassey Asuquo, was a member of the 28 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Umuahia, Abia State, assigned to the area for a special operation.
According to security sources, the incident occurred at 1:50 a.m. Asuquo had been exhibiting unusual behavior prior to the tragedy, prompting his Unit Commander to order that his service rifle be withdrawn and secured at the Sarkin-Pawa Police Division.
However, investigations revealed that Inspector Asuquo later accessed the rifle of a fellow officer who was asleep and used it to shoot himself in the head.
His body has been deposited at the General Hospital in Sarkin-Pawa. Meanwhile, another officer, Inspector Titus Bulus, has been taken in for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
