Football fans worldwide are reeling from the shocking news that Portuguese international and Liverpool striker, Diogo Jota, has died in a car accident in Spain.
The 28-year-old was reportedly killed in a crash along the A-52 highway in Zamora province, within the Castilla y León region. According to Portuguese media, Jota was travelling with his younger brother, André Jota—also a professional footballer—when the accident occurred.
The crash happened at kilometre 65 of the A-52 in Cernadilla, a mountainous stretch known for its sharp bends and poor visibility. Emergency services responded quickly after multiple calls were made to the 1-1-2 Castilla y León emergency line, reporting a car on fire following the collision.
In an official statement, emergency responders confirmed that Jota died at the scene. The Zamora Traffic Police, Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Centre were all dispatched to the area.
Details surrounding the cause of the crash and the condition of Jota’s brother remain unclear as investigations continue.
Jota, renowned for his speed, versatility, and goal-scoring ability, was a key figure for both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team. His sudden death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the football community, with tributes flooding in from clubs, teammates, and fans around the globe.
