Four senators from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), further strengthening the APC’s majority in the Senate.
Their defection letters were read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session.
The defecting lawmakers are Senators Francis Fadahunsi and Olubiyi Fadeyi from Osun State, as well as Akon Eyakenyi and Aniekan Bassey from Akwa Ibom State.
Prominent APC figures, including the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, and former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, were present in the chamber to witness the proceedings, alongside some APC members of the House of Representatives.
With the latest defections, the APC now holds 70 seats in the Senate. The PDP’s numbers have dropped to 28, while the Labour Party (LP) retains five seats.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) holds two seats, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have one seat each. Two seats remain vacant.
