The Ondo State Government has announced the formation of a high-level committee tasked with developing a policy framework and roadmap to drive the state’s transition to a circular economy and tackle climate change.
The initiative, approved by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, was made public by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, during a press briefing at the Governor’s Office in Akure.
According to the commissioner, the committee will be responsible for crafting a comprehensive policy that aligns with national commitments and global standards, including the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This move reflects the administration’s strong commitment to building a resilient, environmentally sustainable, and future-ready Ondo State,” Dr. Loko said.
The committee is expected to include professionals from various sectors — government ministries, development agencies, academia, the private sector, and civil society — to ensure a holistic and inclusive approach.
Key mandates of the committee include promoting green innovation, waste-to-wealth initiatives, and carbon credit readiness.
The roadmap is also expected to unlock investment opportunities and create green jobs across vital sectors such as agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and waste management.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, the commissioner noted that while climate change poses risks to health, livelihoods, and the economy, it also offers a pathway for industrial transformation and sustainable development.
Dr. Loko called on stakeholders, including local communities and development partners, to support the government’s efforts in building a circular and climate-resilient economy.
Details about the committee’s membership and operational timeline will be released in the coming days.
